ILD DYNAMIC DIALOGUES – Reflection on Dynamic Collaboration & Leadership (Part One)
Questions were asked by Frank Strathus (Founder and Managing Senior Partner, ILD).
What leadership challenges do you currently observe most frequently in South Africa?
“A shallow senior talent pool, AI disruption, and persistent pressure to demonstrate both transformation and delivery.
A long-running structural issue remains the gap between planning and delivery. The challenge lies in decisive execution, with leaders too often running from one urgent matter to the next without a clear long-term direction backed by tangible results.”
What similarities do you see between the challenges faced by leaders in South Africa and those in Germany?
“In both countries, leaders face rapid technological change, talent retention challenges, and the need to lead through complexity and uncertainty.”
What role do culture, history, and societal frameworks play in effective leadership?
“They shape how people view authority, trust, communication, and collaboration. Effective leaders understand these influences and adapt without compromising authenticity.”
In your opinion, what makes a leader truly successful today—regardless of industry or country?
“The ability to create trust, develop people, navigate complexity, and align teams around a meaningful purpose.”
How do leaders succeed in building trust and collaboration across cultural, professional, or organisational boundaries?
“By listening well, demonstrating genuine curiosity, communicating transparently, and creating environments where different perspectives are valued.”
Which competencies will be particularly important for leaders over the next five to ten years?
“Adaptability, emotional intelligence, systems thinking, collaboration, learning agility, and the ability to lead alongside AI and emerging technologies.”
